When the ash cloud was to the east yesterday, aviation enthusiasts took the opportunity to photograph several aircraft that were diverted to Adelaide to avoid the potential hazards of the eastern states.

Ash clouds are dangerous to jet engines because of their corrosive nature and clogging of critical components. Also, there is a sand-blasting effect not only on the engines but the airframe and windows.
