Aviation Now Update Bulletin - QANTAS BIO FUEL FLIGHT
AN - 13 April 2012. FiveDME were at Adelaide Airport today for the arrival of the first commercial bio fuel filght in Australia to Adelaide Airport. One engine powered be a 50/50 blend of recycled cooking oil and Jet-A1 (kerosine).
Captain Philip Davenport reported no noticable difference although the engine running on the bo fuel blend had a 1-2% decrease in fuel flow for the same thrust.
Considering an A330 at full load holds around 88,000 litres a saving of up to 2% is a significant amount of fuel, especially across a whole fleet.
Emissions are also less which means benefits for the evironment. Not to mention using oil that would otherwise be disposed of in a not so useful fashion.
It could be interesting to see the results of a 100% biofuel flight. Possibly the performance could be even further increased above the 50/50 blend.
